the machine from beyond time

So.. this is the Intervox.  The top part spins and there is a compass on the flat part.  There are knobs and stuff.  What is it?

sorry, can't see the photo without getting an evil(tm) facebook account, but yeah, if it's like the ones on the other site, then that's what it is. The basic theory being that when the wide side of the antenna is pointed towards the source, there is more surface area facing the wave and the signal will be stronger, kinda like a weather vane. It sounds fun:)
