Mortising machine chisels are sharp!
I don't actually have a problem when I'm using the machine. I'm too careful and paranoid of the cutting edges for that, but for some reason I keep brushing up against the chisels when I'm NOT using them. So far it's only been scratches, but each one has bled a bit. Almost had to put a bandaid on the last one;)

This weekend I...
- Finished a project that's been taking forever and got it out of the garage. (Fancy hanging menu chalk boards for the Wayward cafe)
- Got rid of or otherwise organized a heap of stuff that's been piling up in the shop and getting in the way.
- Cleaned, treated, and put away a whole bunch of woodworking tools that were in danger of rusting from wood dust/ ( Read more... )

I'm back in school!
Or at least night school. I signed up for evening classes for a course in clock repair and tonight was my first class. Actually, it was the fourth class, but with my background in machining I was pretty much already caught up with everyone else.

Do you have any idea what it's like to break off a cobalt drill bit 2 inches deep into a hunk of mild steel that you've just spent the last 3 days milling into shape?

Slicey Goodness
Just put a metal-cutting blade on the second bandsaw, but before I did that I figured I might as well tune it up. So I tore it completely apart, returned the guide bearings, (I love my metal lathe), trued the wheels, filed the stop blocks, and oiled the heck out of everything.
Now it cuts aluminum like butter and steel like well-aged gouda!

I'm finally a full-fledge iPhone dev!
Finally took the plunge and applied. Yesterday got back all the authorizations and super-secret codes from Apple. Today I went through the whole process of building an app, pushing it to my iPod, and actually playing it.
Woohoo!
Now I just need to get busy and actually finish something and get it in the store.

Yep, I know this is a ridiculous long shot, but thought I'd mention it anyway:
Tomorrow (Monday) I'm going to go do a spring inspection of the boat over at Magnuson. If anyone's interested and finds themselves with no plans tomorrow, I could be easily talked into dropping it into the water.

Brass casting, anyone?
Sunday night I constructed my first kiln for melting brass and aluminum. It now has to cure for a week, then we will do the first firing next weekend. Since the recipes I found for making the refractory were all different and contradicted each other, I just made a guess at the mixture, so it will either work well or explode.
