My life has altered (or at least postponed) its course for the time being. Up until Sunday I had been obsessing to a pretty unhealthy degree over my application to Hampshire, but upon calling the college to confirm deadlines I was told that for the first time in their history they won't be accepting applicants for Spring due to over-enrollment. Perhaps I'm just misunderstood what you said, but actively protecting the environment (just not in the way that the crazy bear guy did) is important. The whole idea of leaving habitats alone and letting them replenish themselves is all good and noble, but leaving something alone simply means that someone without similar feelings is just going to come in and tear shit up for their own benefit. Nature, if not protected adequately, is inevitably exploited. Always.

Once again, maybe I'm just reading what you said all wrong. I'm tired and cranking through midterm papers, so forgive me if I've totally missed the mark.

No worries, I can totally see how you would misread that --
For the record you'd be hardpressed to find someone who is more of a touchy-feely tree-hugger than myself, so I was criticising not only bear dude but me in a way for my sentimentality. My sporadic train of thought led me to the eventual conclusion that I would like everyone in the world to respect nature enough not to exploit it. I don't think that's a particularly likely prospect. But I also think that the environmental movement often thwarts its own goals, for instance by banning mining in the U.S., so that instead of seeing the damage caused by our over-consumption of resources we wind up importing everything from non-industrialized countries without any awareness of the destruction we inflict on them. So, uh, yeah, I think that covers it.
