During the Civil War, it was vitally important for Lincoln to insure the Union that he was in complete control over the situations. But when Philip Sheridan disobeyed orders while in service, it showed that Lincoln didn’t quite have control over his army and it made him look like he was not the right man to lead the country. Sheridan could have been more disastrous to Lincoln’s campaign had his disobedience resulted in a large number of casualties, but instead, his choice to go against command resulted in Lee’s forced retreat of Petersburg.
