I can see what your problem is just by looking at this post. There is no little lock on top, indicating that you did not make it friends only.
I've been getting more spam lately, too -- but only on old posts that were public. The ones that are locked never get spammed. (You can go back and edit old posts to lock them, but you may not want to bother.)
I don't know if you can do it automatically. I do it as each piece of spam comes in: I either lock it or, if it's not a post worth keeping, delete it. But that's easier for me, since the bulk of mine are already locked.

I wonder if any of these have a deterrent effect. Also FWIW I have a paid account (dunno if all of these options are available otherwise).
I just tightened up security on everything there about 2 hours ago, and I'm about to go to bed, but I'll leave you a note about what my old settings were tomorrow evening.
The main one was only friends can reply to my comments now. That should cut out the b.s. but I think that also means I won't be making friends here as easily.
My blog is entirely open and I rarely receive spam messages of any sort, however I didn't receive as many secret crushes as Jeremy. I only got three :-(
These "crushes" were all in the Roman alphabet. All my other spam comments are in Russian. One Russian spam message per month is my intake.
Mine are all on old blog posts that received the most attention in terms of comments. I changed some settings yesterday, and a few more today. Good news, no spam today. yet.
