You may be asking why I've only been posting BG/RPG stuff lately. Well, that's the most exciting thing happening in my life right now that isn't whining or complaining. Not kidding. Wanna know what my days are like
( Read more... )
We're fond of kult of athena (www.kultofathena.com). They have scratch and dent sales, too. Much of our living room is filled with their stuff.
I'm also fond of my Legolas knives (or rather, the cheap knock-offs for $25). I have solo part with them in our current choreography. :) (should send you a link to the video!)
There's also a cool place in downtown Mesa that has historical antiques (civil war, japanese, filipino, arabic, etc.). Patrick just got a crist (filipino) with a meteorite blade on Saturday.
There might be some at the Ren Faire or Estrella War that have curvy blades. I've seen a few there.
Ooooh.... Yeah, they have some pretty cool stuff, too! (Though, my favorites are just for display. *sadpanda*)
Yes, send video!!! :D I got to play around with movie replicas in NZ; heavier than I thought, but they were infinitely easier to wield than any of the other weaponry!
Meteorite blade. *drooooool*
Yeah, I should check out what the ren faire has this year. I went a couple years ago, but I didn't go into the weapon shops (not sure why?!).
For training in Bujinkan, it's advised to get a bokken (wooden sword) when you're a green belt. I got mine two years ago through a Bujinkan dojo in Pennsylvania. Live weapons are for when you attain your black belt. Or attain more levels of awesome. Given your stature, get a hanbo (3 foot wood rod), jo (4 foot wood rod) or bokken.
I do have to admit, though, that the katana is many levels of kewl.
Yeah, I do have a bokken, which is great for practice and going WHACK. And I know we don't get to live weapons until much later, but it's not a bad thing to have one already. :D I do need to get a hanbo/jo/other practice stuff, though.
When you get the sword show us a picture please? If it were me I'd get a medium-length curved sword with some handle decoration. In the game I'm playing now (Castlevania: Curse of Darkness) your character is a forgemaster who can magically create weapons from a variety of raw materials and metals.
Yeah, that's basically what I'm looking for: something medium-sized, curvy, and not too plain (but not too crazy either)...which is why I'm kind of focusing on scimitars.
I totally relate to the entire first part of your post. I have this job, great. I like the job, though the pay sucks. There's no way to know if they'll ask me to come back next year (all about money). I have no grants. I have no way to get to Spain (right now I don't even have the money to pay all my bills...). I can't write my dissertation because I don't have enough information. I think something big will happen with Scott soon. But that just makes this more complicated. My advisor and I haven't spoken since I took this job. And I'm thinking that the PhD might have just been a pipe dream. It got me here, but I don't think it's going to happen. The only things that really matter to me have nothing to do with the degree anymore. *sigh*
Yeah...though, I'd say you still have a decent shot at finishing the Ph.D. eventually...as long as they don't mind if you take a little hiatus. Then again, if the only things that matter to you don't involve the degree, then...maybe it's okay if it remains unfinished...?
Still not a fun feeling, though, I know. :-/ *hug*
To address your pointed question, no, I have no ideas for weaponsmiths... although there is a rennaisance faire here every year, I could have a look at their archives and see if there isn't anything there...
As for the astronomy thing... well, if you don't want to be in astronomy, and you don't feel like you want to be in astronomy, then logic simply doesn't apply. You cannot make yourself want to stay in a field, no matter how much sense it's supposed to make. It may be a silly piece of advice, but... go and sample other things before you try and make up your mind. Hell, even if you go into that field, it hardly restricts you from exploring alternatives. People don't go from being accountants to archaeologists just because of job loss, yanno. :)
Hee hee, I know. I've heard lots of stories about people who have completely switched fields and done wonderful stuff...as well as people who are famous for stuff they did in their spare time (and not for what they did as a job).
I've spoken with my advisor since this post, and I'll probably at least give astronomy another chance. I can always do something else if I decide it's not worth it.
