You're not going to hear any break the sound barrier, either--illegal over populated areas, in the U.S.

Well, except for one and I worked there for a year. Edwards AFB.

Low flying sonic booms are very impressive.

"you could tell those apart from the other passenger planes by the noise alone"

hi I'm Tupolev and I'm going to rip off everyone else's basically worst plane designs except add even more drag

Before Griffiss Air Force Base turned into Rome Air Force Research Labs, There were military cargo planes flying overhead very frequently, especially on the golf course I played at underneath the approach.

I finally saw one.

It was some sort of fighter jet.

Two jet engines, two tails, wings kinda like an F-18. Actually it looked just like the pictures of the F-18 that google image search brings up.

Most of the ones I hear sound just like it.

This one did two banked circles over campus.

Ah, of course, the nearby base at Miramar is now a "Marine Corps Air Station" and the marines apparently fly variants of the F-18.

The intarweb claims that the Miramar base used to be a joint Navy/Marines base and the location of the TOPGUN school.

MCAS Miramar used to be known as NAS Miramar, and it was the home of TOPGUN. In the movie they talk about it. Today they've moved TOPGUN to NAS Fallon in Nevada and only the Marines still use Miramar. Marines fly F/A-18Cs. Eventually they'll be replaced by F-35 Joint Strike Fighters.

Yeah, I distinctly remember this from when I was a kid. "Mom, why are the airplanes flying over us when the airport is downtown?"

When they get close, it's very loud. Hmm, or maybe that was helicopters. See if you can spot a Huey; they're like flying camels.
