According to Merriam-Webster, "surreal" is a back-formation from "surrealism". I suspected that might be the case, but I still find it fascinating ( Read more... )

That is so cool. Where does the word surrealism come from?
And I know what you mean about getting lost in wikipedia. The article on the town of Wheaton is fascinating when you have time.

Mmm. I presume they just came up with a word which would describe their art, and "above realism" fit nicely.
