According to Merriam-Webster, "surreal" is a back-formation from "surrealism". I suspected that might be the case, but I still find it fascinating

From the artistic movement. They invented it, I guess.

Mmm. I presume they just came up with a word which would describe their art, and "above realism" fit nicely.
