I have two questions for any friends who may be diabetic themselves or know someone else who is: what brand of glucometer would you recommend, and do you know of any sources for low-cost (or even better, free) ones and the other necessary supplies? (For those of you who I touch base with less frequently, I was recently diagnosed with type 2 ( Read more... )

I'm in the same boat as you (though I've been there for five years).

I'm surprised your doctor didn't give you one when you were diagnosed. I had one given to me five years ago, and just got a new one last week, both for free.

This is what I just got: http://www.bayerdiabetes.com/us/bayerglucosemeters/contourmeter (note the "Get one free" link.)

As my doctor described it to me, they give them for free because the test strips are where they make their money... it's as if gas companies gave out free cars and charged $100 a gallon for gas.

A search for "free glucose meter" online will likely point you at other sites and resources.

I checked out the Bayer site, thanks. I'm waiting for my doctor to respond about the prescription I need to use the Bayer coupon.

Haven't had time to check out the CDC site yet, darn blurred vision limits my ability to do much online right now. Thanks for the link, though.

heya, personally i prefer using the one touch brand tester and test strips. how ever its rather costly without insurance. my manager at work has been using meijer brand tester and test strips because she has no insurance and she has had no complaints that i know of while using these and she has to test up to 8 times a day. good luck with everything. ~Erin

Good to know, thanks. I'm not sure how often my doctor will want me to test. At this point all I have as a gauge is my symptoms, and have to do some experimentation to determine what relieves them.
