The allure of oil paint...

I never thought I would succumb to oil paint. The standard reasons were there. Too messy, too toxic, too expensive. But I took a painting class and the instructor was clearly biased against acrylics, so to get a better grade, I ran out and bought the supplies anyway ( Read more... )

They are so beautiful! I especially love Pemaquid, of course, since I have an insatiable love of lighthouses. :)

Yes, I remember that you love lighthouses. I'm glad you enjoyed this one. It's one of my favorite lighthouses. I have a small photo collection going of all the ones I've been to :).

We do that, too, with the photos. It's the best way to remember where we've been and which ones we've seen! :)

I first learned to paint with oils when i was a kid..my dad painted. I hated acrylics..but i ended up being a non objective painted and learned to love acrylic and mixed medium.I still dabble in oils tho. I was very sad when i moved to the westcoast and the one thing that got lost was a big toolbox full of all my mediums, the kind you work on for ages to get that painting right..and my paintstiks and my dad's oil paints and brushes which i sort of inherited, and can't replace.(Good oil paints last forever).

Oh, I would be sad too if I lost something as precious as your dad's oil painting supplies. :( I do like all the other mediums as well. At this point, I love bouncing back and forth between all of them :).

Okay, let's see how much we can accomplish this year in our painting :D. I really should paint at my easel, but for some reason, I'm so used to painting on the floor that I still wind up painting there of all places. Post new painting pics when you have them ;).

Oh, do you varnish your paintings after they dry?

I was just talking to someone about varnishing oil paintings the other day. I've done it a few times-but I don't think I did a very good job of it and was really unhappy that I did it. So ever since that disaster I haven't done it. You have to wait until they are completely dry too, which can take up to a year!

Do you varnish?

My big thing now is doing mixed media with oils...I've been doing little 4"x4" paintings and putting them on ebay. I'll be posting the newest one in about a week or so...must wait til it dries!!!!! That's the most frustrating part for me-the dry time. But it's good to have lots of other things going at the same time too.

So does varnishing change the painting? I'm imagining that there would be a sheen (seeing as I've never varnished before) - if so, is it good or bad?

Hmmm...mixed media with oils. Sounds very interesting. What do you mix with it? I'm still not up to mixed media with oil for fear of something cracking and that fat over lean stuff that I seldom pay attention to.

Oils aren't easy... I tried just once, a long time ago and I quite hated the results! Yours are lovely though. Especially the first one :)

Thank you! I'm glad you liked the first painting. The items are all favorites of mine - a candlestick holder from my boyfriend, a wooden vessel, and a glazed sake cup.

I looked at your website - it says you studied in Florence. We were in Italy this year. Florence was a good place to visit. I was SO disappointed that we were there on the weekend of Palm Sunday. I wanted to visit the big art store and it was closed :(.

My souvenirs of Florence are tiny paintings that were sold by those artists that seem to be everywhere. I picked out two that seemed lovelier than the rest. They are the best souvenirs of that trip. I can't wait to go back!

Yes, I studied comics drawing in Florence for 3 years. Now I live in the countryside around Milan, more on the north of Italy; but I treasure the memories from those years. Florence is a beautiful city, with a great atmosphere and art everywhere. It's a pity you were there on a festive day when shops are closed :(
I'm glad you enjoyed your trip to Italy! :)

We didn't get to Milan :(. All those places that we visited with the tour were great, but Milan wasn't on the schedule. Hopefully next time (I do wish for a next time!).

I'm going to add you back :D.
