I don't know who it is; I'm assuming a neighbor. A couple of neighbors and I have had plants dug/pulled up, as well as garden tools stolen, and once a trellis.
Seriously, though. What do you do? Call the police to report a stolen plant? I mean... really.
I'm in the process of re-doing the landscaping in our front yard (nothing major, just moving things around/adding things/getting rid of things), but I'm hesitant to plant anything again (especially roses) for fear that they will be nabbed. The flip side of that is I feel like there is no way I'm going to let this jerk keep me from planting my garden!
The thing is, I can't seem to think of a good "deterrent". I'm looking for ideas, I guess...
Thieving neighbors huh? After putting your plants out you could spray them with some fish emulsion or even make your own. I kinda doubt thieves will steal stinky plants. Have you got an old computer camera or an old video camera? Even if it doesn't work I'd set it up in the window where everyone could see it and have it pointed at my garden. Most thieves won't if they think they could be caught... If you have the money or the tech know-how, you could rig a motion detector to a loud radio or a garden hose or your computer camera. Hmmm. I think one of the home shopping networks had something along this line on TV a week or so ago. Cyndi's List of Catalogs (Google this phrase) contains contact information on most of the companies that cater to gardeners in North America. Surely one of the garden supply companies will have an anti-garden theft device for sale in it. Hope this helps. ;)

I don't really get it either. I actually wrote about it here: http://adventure-girl.livejournal.com/142059.html
