my parents think they know. but they don't know a single thing. they don't know the things i have to deal with. they don't know the feelings in my heart. they don't know my love, my anger, and all of my sorrow ( Read more... )

It is because you're not a child anymore that you have the freedom to do what you want with your hair. It is only hair. It will grow back. If you have reasons for dying your hair, but do not wish to share them, just ask your parents to respect your decisions and choices. Their treating you as an adult will help you to act like one.

so they think by tearing you down they'll get their way?
you're worth so much more than what they are making you feel like. they should be grateful for having a son who cares so much what his parents think.

maybe they mean well and think they know what is best for you, but it's hurting more than helping. i just watched the joy luck club a while ago and it reminded me how when mothers criticize it is because they are feeling insecure about themselves or think they are going to help you make your life better by somehow trying to control your life. maybe if you tell her a little of how you said here, maybe she would empathize a little bit more. idk, but maybe.

my mom used to tell me what to do a lot, but i finally told her that it felt like she didn't trust me enough and how that really hurt how she didn't seem to think i was capable enough. that really helped. she has backed off a lot.

i don't see what's wrong with you having your hair dyed at all. when you're "grown up" it shouldn't mean you should stop living.
