spare change, reformation of the spirit.

a mixture of avoidance and creation today; shrank away from an outing to instead refurbish a room. irridescent curtains, newly sewn, higher ceilings and light everywhere. this makes me feel good, even if it was only a cover.

what do you mean by not 'believing' in movies like Happiness? i'm just curious, i just viewed Storytelling, and it left an overall sickening feeling, though i did appreciate its attempt to move beyond the confines of typical films... something like that.

oh, i added you to my friends list, 'cause i like your writing. :)

I'm sorry for taking so long to respond, but I really want to answer your question thoroughly (probably too much so, now that I think of it) and I wanted to make sure I understood the reasons myself before I tried to explain them ( ... )

boy, that was an angry diatribe, and I'm completely unqualified to deliver it. Happiness left me with a sick feeling as well, and I've heard a lot lately of Storytelling, both good and bad.

here's the thing, possibly closer to the truth than what's posted above, or at least more true to me:

I view art as an escape of sorts, a release, a source of higher truth. I want to believe there are amazing things in this world, and I don't have much use for movies that only reinforce my fears and weaknesses. Maybe such things can be useful, but I neither need nor want them. I can get plenty discouraged on my own.

I didn't like Happiness either. For some of the same reasons and for some different reasons, as well. I liked Welcome To The Dollhouse, I thought that it was brilliant. One of these days I will get around to seeing Storytelling...but there is really no rush. I do enjoy the soundtrack, although all of the songs are by that other guy in Belle & Sebastian. I don't like his songs quite as much. It is a mediocre B&S album, but pretty good all the same.
