OK. Yeah. I'm annoyed.

Thinking about Sean's panel at ECCC and truth to tell I found some of what he said to be rather annoying. He seems to deliberately denigrate his friendship with... not just Elijah... but any of the his LOTR cast members. When asked who his best friend on the set was he said, in a very abrupt tone "Christopher Lee!" then instantly turned to the next ( Read more... )

Sean has a changed a lot, I think, and not all for the better.

I can see why what he said would bother you.

Yeah.. and you know, I"m not claiming that I'm stating fact. But it's sure the impression he gave during his panel and it's how I ended up feeling about it.

And I totally agree with you that not all his changes have been for the better. *shrug* But.. that's life.

Sean is far more educated AND well connected than the other "hobbits" He's also married and has strong political interests. As we age, we all change in different ways. I think each of them had to come to grips with the LotR thing because it affected them all so deeply. I think Elijah struggled for a long time to figure out how to move on from it. He knows he never will completely, and he doesn't want to, but it can't keep him from moving forward in his life and doing other things. It's the same with Sean. Sean is 10 years older than Elijah, and someone in their mid-40's is having a whole lot of issues thrown their way that are difficult to comes to grip with. Ageing is one big issue, but the way Sean goes to so many events all the time (like conventions) makes me think he may be having trouble getting enough money these days ( ... )

Everything you say here makes perfect sense to me, Prim. But... he's been expressing this kind of attitude since long before Pattie died. This was just one more instance of the same thing.

but you're certainly right the Sean... or ANY of them for that matter.. could be going through life changes that we know nothing about. And I wondered the same thing... why the HELL was he at some obscure CON signing his name for hour after endless hour a week after his mom died?? It occurred to me, too, that he may have needed the money. Who knows?

And your'e right too about the aging thing.. plus, he's REALLY struggling with his weight! When Cathy and I first saw him at his autograph table we both damn hear fainted. Then we thought.. we'll we only glimpsed him, maybe we didn't see it right, but no. He's REALLY heavy! Much more so than when he was Sam. That's probably weighing on him too.

I'm not putting the guy down. I'm just saying that I was both annoyed and disappointed by what he said.

That does seem like a very dramatic turnaround, one I, too, find disturbing and disappointing. I'm going to go out on a limb here, but I have to wonder if it has to do with the death of his mother. Is it possible that Elijah didn't reach out to Sean with his sympathy and condolences? If they were as close as we all believe, if Elijah didn't call him, that must have really hurt Sean. And perhaps none of the other actors reached out either, so when he was asked which one he was closest to during filming, Sean chose the only actor who couldn't have because he'd passed on. *takes off amateur psychologist's hat now*

That is a Very very good possibility.

A lot had changed also after Sean wrote his book. I remember many discussions that the other actors were offended by the tone of the book and words said and implied they were never really together in a "together" sense after that. Their appearances were seperate until that one photoshoot spread of the four which e en then showed Elijah more with Dom and Billy.
I find it strange Sean would randomly bring up the erotic fanfiction like that also.

Hmmm. :(

You may be right. I know that book created stress between S&E, though by the time we saw them together at ORC in 2006, they seemed fine. As lovey-dovey as ever.

Ah... we'll never know. And it's just as well we don't I suppose. It's their business... but Sean's comments and attitude were very disappointing and sad.

I thought that the stress was between Orlando and Sean, but it's been a long time.
What sort of things made it seem that Sean and Elijah had difficulties after the book?

I responded under ink gypsy comment. It sounds very disappointing. Frankly the Christopher Lee comment sounded pretentious. Maybe they both liked to complain together. :(

That is completely different behavior from before. Something could have happened between him and other cast members or maybe he's just tired of answering questions from that period. There could be so many reasons and we'll probably never know why.

You're so right, Addie. We sure will never know what happened. It was very sad to hear it though. *sigh*

we were writing Sam and Frodo erotic fan fiction LONG before you put on those ears and feet

So true! I wonder if he's starting to think about a political or more religiously active career, and is being more careful about what he says in public?

I didn't think he was that religious, but I can see him going into politics so this theory makes sense to me

Actually from what I've heard he really IS religious. But politics makes as much sense to me too.
