Remember, Tolkein was a Christian. Frodo was meant to fail to show that *no one* can be Saved without the Grace of God. And it was the earlier act of mercy of a hobbit sparing Gollum that allowed the ring to be destroyed..."The Lord works in Mysterious Ways".
