I just remembered being very little in elementary school and there were woods way back behind the playground and everyone called them "Africa." I think somewhere on the other side of Africa there were woods called "Asia." You could travel over a mile in those woods and come out somewhere that would take you like ten minutes to get to by car just ( Read more... )

remembering ignorance is such a weird feeling
i want to name a familiar wild place after a continent or a country, or maybe refer to my home as a country. "i can hang out for another hour but after that i gotta head back to Peru"

thanks. I like it, too. I had forgotten about it for a long time. I am always fascinated by child myths and culture. Like which kid first started calling a set of woods "Africa" and how did it catch on? It's such a cool name. It could have been a long time ago because things seem to somehow stick around through generations of kids. I bet the kids at my old elementary are still singing some of the same rhymes and playing the same games on the playground that I did. Older kids teach younger kids and the kids move on but the ideas don't.
