Listening to NPR's coverage of the inauguration and I'm embarrassed for my country. One interviewer observed that about 98% of the visible crowd is African American. They also mentioned that all of the statues in the Mall are of white men except for MLK which took a special act to have placed. All these happy observations are making me crazy. I almost get irritated hearing people say "first black president". I mean, of course it's true, and it's a milestone. I think it's so much more important that his father was an immigrant and that he was raised by just his mother, and that his mother and father wouldn't have even been able to GET married in some states at the time of his birth. Those things are economic milestones too.
