Sam had enough scars. Breaks in the skin meant infection and immobility and some statistic about the strength of scars never catching back up to the original flesh
( ... )
Awesome. I can totally see Sam resorting to something like this. He'd be smart about it too, using pain inflicted by injuries that wouldn't be debilitating or too noticeable.
You know, I'd hope he'd be smart enough, but on the show they're always slashing their palms open when there's other much more easily bandaged places to get blood, and these wonderful things called sterile hypodermic needles, and I just don't know. :(
I just always wanted an excuse to talk about peeling the nerves out of the inside of your own ribs. That's just one of the most painful things I can think of.
I really like the implication of escalation here. That it starts as something simple and gets progressively more severe. And the assertion that he won't need to destroy himself, paired with that, suggests that the equivalent of gnawing his own leg off will absolutely be the end result of this(not to mention the fact that it obviously doesn't even work for very long). Sneaky, disturbing, and very well done!
Take it from someone who once tried removing a Sharpie tattoo with a scissors edge and some rubbing alcohol: intact skin has lots of nerves in it. (Not recommended.)
You know, I hadn't really thought of that implication; I was more going on the idea of Sam slipping back into one of Lucifer's old games where Sam hurt himself and Lucifer got off on it. But you're totally right. This kind of thinking could eat him alive, always ticking along in the back of his brain: what if I dislocate a rib? could electricity work? what if there's an emergency? what if it's not enough? what if it's playing right into Imaginary Lucifer's hands?
And the worst part is, it's just his brain that's doing this. It's like it got all stretched out from having an angel in it and is currently trying to eat itself.
Ooh, this is brilliant and so creepy/sad. I love it. Sam's very methodical process of figuring out how to inflict enough pain without serious damage is both very IC and terribly, terribly sad.
