As for determinism, altering memories doesn't really change much. There's nothing that says that a person using memory-altering techniques isn't fated to do so, and that they aren't fated to live their lives differently.
If you need help thinking about drastic mental change, think about people who get brain damage via an accident. They can become vastly different people very quickly, but if causality is indeed so strict as to dictate a single possible time line then they were causally forced into the brain-crushing accident.
Now intentional, targeted brain damage might just be the new ultimate expression of free will; since it allows someone to purposefully change them-self more than anything previously available. After a memory-killer therapy you'd pop out a different person. That said, you do this every day after a good night's sleep as well.
As for your first topic, I'm having trouble figuring out where my LJ fits in my web-life now too.
this is pretty Eternal Sunshine, isn't it? Maybe it'll be the sequel :P But I suppose the concept would be the same. It's a well-meaning therapy that will help a few people, but be abused too
