Chapter 28
“My business associate asked me to come along, he knows the bride,” Kahlan says slowly.
Now that they have moved to one of the guest bathrooms inside the house, Cara can take care of the stain on her blouse and they have some time to talk.
“It’s not a date or anything, he just didn’t have anyone to go with,” the brunette quickly adds and looks down self-consciously. The last thing she needs at the moment is Cara telling her that she is here with her boyfriend. Kahlan cringes inwardly at the word boyfriend, knowing that it would certainly deliver the death blow to her if she had to endure seeing him and Cara together.
The detective however shakes her head.
“My partner Richard invited me to come along. The bride is his sister.”
“You’re serious?”
Kahlan quickly tries to connect the dots in her mind but only comes as far as to realize that fate is in fact a bitch with an odd sense of humor.
“Well, this is a nice surprise either way,” Cara says, interrupting the brunette’s train of thought.
Kahlan nods and smiles, trying to cover her confusion.
“It is indeed. Gives me a chance to say thank you.”
“For what?”
“For the dinner. It was really nice that you cooked for me.”
“Oh sure, it was my pleasure.”
Cara steps closer to the sink, simply unbuttons her blouse and takes it off to rub some water and spot remover onto the stains. Kahlan stands there with her mouth hanging open. Although Cara is wearing a white tank top underneath it’s the most undressed she has ever seen the detective. The muscles in Cara’s arms and back are flexing as she tries to get rid of the stains.
Kahlan swallows hard and attempts to look at something else, anything else, but her eyes keep on traveling back to the exposed skin. She is more than just a little uncomfortable and it takes all of her considerable will power to keep her hands to herself.
She moves away from Cara and toward the door, ready to escape but the door is suddenly flung open and Kahlan stumbles forward.
“Oops, sorry!” a voice calls, but Kahlan isn't listening.
Cara turned around when she’d heard the door open and Kahlan stumbles right into the blonde’s arms.
And suddenly they are so very close to each other with Cara instinctively wrapping her arms around the brunette's waist.
Kahlan takes quick breaths but her heart still beats way too loud. She feels the blonde’s body heat through her dress and her cheeks flush immediately. The way Cara stares at her, makes her stomach drop and all she can do in that moment is lean forward and brush their lips together.
It’s electrifying to say in the least and Kahlan feels all sorts of emotions running through her body. She thought that she’d never want anything like that ever again, but here she is, initiating a kiss she knows will get her into so much trouble.
And even though she feels the hesitation from the other woman, she begins nibbling on those incredibly soft lips. They’re standing so close together that she can feel Cara’s breasts brushing against her own and she can’t even begin to stop that quiet moan from leaving her throat. Cara’s hands move to her hips where they pull her closer, sliding their bodies together. The detective responds tentatively letting her tongue explore Kahlan’s lips in return. She runs her hands up Cara’s back, feeling the strong muscles she admired earlier. Heat is rising within and around her until suddenly Cara stops.
“The wedding starts! Everyone to the backyard!” someone calls and Kahlan suddenly jerks away as if burned by fire.
She stares wide-eyed a the detective who looks back at her with the exact same expression.
“I am...I am sorry.”
Without giving Cara the chance to tell her that she never wants to see her again, Kahlan flees out of the room and toward the garden where she eventually bumps into Rahl. There is a small smile on his lips when he offers his arm to her.
“There you are. I’ve been looking for you. I just managed to talk a bit to Jennsen and she is glad that I’m here.”
“Good. That’s good,” Kahlan answers distractedly as Rahl leads her to a row in the back. There are dozens of white chairs in the garden, leaving a space in the middle where the bride will be led to the altar where a priest with a bible is already waiting, together with two young men in tuxedos.
Murmurs go through the crowd and Cara hurries past them and to a seat in the front. Kahlan doesn’t look at her and stares straight ahead until the bride arrives. The young woman, Jennsen, is a beautiful red-head in an even more beautiful dress. She smiles brightly as an elderly man leads her past the assembled guests.
Jennsen flashes Rahl a quick grin as they pass and then the most important part of the whole ceremony starts.
Kahlan tries to focus on what is happening but her lips are still tingling and she catches herself touching them with her fingertips more than once.
Next to her Rahl is beaming, his entire posture relaxed. Kahlan is happy for him because he still has a good heart beneath all that cold exterior and because he has family. There is almost nothing more important than having people one can trust and rely on.
After Jennsen is married to the handsome looking guy next to her, the guests get up and hurry to the bridal couple to tell them their good wishes and to congratulate them. Kahlan and Rahl however stay back and watch the entire scene from afar. A man with shaggy brown hair, who looks vaguely familiar, hugs Jennsen and Cara soon follows suit.
“Ready to go?” Rahl asks.
“You want to leave already?”
“Yeah, it’s better if I’m not around her for too long. People might get suspicious and this is supposed to be her happiest day, I wouldn’t want to ruin it.”
Kahlan nods in understanding and takes Rahl’s offered arm. Together they make their way out of the garden and back to the street.
“Kahlan!”
The brunette immediately stops and her shoulders tense. She turns around and watches Cara approach them with quick strides. The detective narrows her eyes at Rahl as if trying to decide if she has seen him before.
“I think we should talk,” the blonde then announces quietly, leaning close to Kahlan and resting a hand on her arm. She ignores Rahl for the moment and gazes imploringly into Kahlan's eyes.
“I’ll just stop by your place tonight, alright?”
Kahlan wants to shake her head, she wants to say no, but instead she agrees, wondering if there is anything that she could deny the blonde detective.
Cara then turns away and leaves them standing there.
“What…?” Rahl begins but Kahlan just shakes her head.
“Please don’t ask. I don’t have any answers either.”
He raises an eyebrow at her but remains silent and the two of them make their way back to the car. Rahl takes her home and thanks her yet again for coming along.
“Although it was short, it was truly enjoyable. No need to thank me.”
Rahl smiles at her one last time and she gets out of the car and watches him drive off.
Although she thought that her life couldn’t possibly get more complicated than it already is, she is proven wrong yet again. Cara is coming to her apartment and wants to actually talk. About what? That she might possibly be a criminal? That she has kissed her in a moment of complete insanity?
Kahlan sighs and trudges up the stairs. Dahlia isn’t home and probably won’t be coming back until late at night. That at least gives her some time and peace to clean the apartment as best as she can before Cara arrives.
She changes into more comfortable clothing and searches the empty fridge unsuccessfully for some food. Whatever might happen in the days to come, she definitely needs to find a job to actually earn some money. Because Dahlia’s meagre pay isn’t doing much to improve their situation.
But what Dahlia doesn’t even know yet is that she can finally stop paying back that debt, since Rahl declared it settled once and for all. She promises herself to sit Dahlia down as soon as she gets home to tell her the good news.
Kahlan drops onto the small couch and leans back, her stomach grumbling quietly.
She just needs a moment to close her eyes and then she’ll order some pizza and mentally prepare herself for Cara.
But instead she is woken up by the doorbell hours later.
She scrambles from the couch and lands hard on her knees.
“Ouch! Damn.”
Next there is a knock on her door.
“Kahlan? Are you alright?”
“Yeah! Coming!” the brunette calls and gets back up on her feet.
She is still wearing a washed out gray shirt and jeans, not exactly the perfect outfit to open the door in, but there is no changing that now. She rakes a hand through her hair to get some of the tangles out and then stumbles to the door. Taking one last breath she opens and it finds her blonde detective standing there with two brown bags in her hands. Cara is wearing a dark leather jacket and jeans. Her hair looks a little ruffled from the wind and Kahlan is pretty certain that she has never seen anything more beautiful.
She blinks once and tries to stop staring.
Cara raises the brown bags with a small smile, a delicious smell emanating from them.
“Remember that little restaurant I showed you? I got us some food, hope you’re hungry.”
A grin spreads across the brunette’s features when her stomach grumbles in agreement.
“Yes! You’re my savior!” Kahlan answers without thinking and suddenly the statement hangs heavily in the air between them.
Cara then clears her throat.
“Mind if I come in?”
“Oh yes, of course,” Kahlan answers and steps aside.
Cara looks around for a moment while Kahlan takes one of the bags from the blonde and sits down on the small couch. The detecive joins her a moment later.
“So,” Cara begins while opening the plastic lid of her salad.
“You kissed me.”
Kahlan suddenly freezes mid-movement, after digging right into her food, a forkful of pasta halfway to her mouth.
