Travel and First Days in Canterbury

Jul 02, 2008 17:05

After a few mishaps, I've arrived at Canterbury in England!

My flight from Colorado Springs to Dallas got diverted to Denver, thanks to an air seal that broke on the plane. That sounds dramatic, but what it really meant was that we couldn't reach altitude. The cabin wouldn't pressurize properly if we got too high off the ground. So we landed at ( Read more... )

Those pictures are absolutely lovely! I love cathedrals. It's amazing how people from so long ago were capable of building such impressive monuments.

Sorry about your grandma. :( It's really too bad it happened your first day in England. My condolences to your and your family.

Thanks. My dad says that Grandma's service was beautiful. I wish I could have been there, but I've been remembering her.

I've been to the cathedral several more times, and I'm still soaking it in!

I'm sorry to hear about your grandmother, but I'd like to believe she would have been happy to know you were in Canterbury getting to do something you really wanted.

Just before she died, the rest of my family went to visit her. At that point she hadn't spoken in a long time. But when my dad mentioned that I was in England, she said "That's great!" : ) She knew I love taking pictures and traveling. Her family also had roots over here.

I hope you have a wonderful time soaking up the cultural. Are you feeling the weight of history as you're walking?

That's a really nice metaphor for how it feels, actually! Yep, I am, especially in the cathedral. What's funny is that many of the buildings have been renovated and now house stores like Gap and Subway. : )

Wow, pretty pictures!! I'm pretty sure I saw that when I went over there, though I didn't go inside it. That is one very pretty building.

I'm sorry about your grandmother, but I think she'd have been happy to know that you're doing something that you're enjoying.

When I rounded a corner and saw the cathedral, I almost couldn't believe my eyes!

Thanks for the condolences about my grandma. Her family came from the UK a long time ago, so I like to think that I'm feeling a bit of her presence here.

I'm so sorry about your grandma, love. *snuggle*

Those pictures are absolutely gorgeous. And of course AmAir skimps on hotel service. :P Go figure!

Thanks, Jessie. *snuggle back* I was very fortunate to have known her while she was alive.

Yeah, I wasn't overly impressed with American Airlines. They didn't have enough concern for the fact that their "mechanical issue" had entirely disrupted my trip. Everyone knows that a Motel 6 in Dallas isn't the best choice for a girl traveling alone...

Indeed. That's one thing I regret about moving out here - I didn't really know most of my older relatives before they died. *sigh*

Eeek. Thank god for deadbolts on the doors!

my sister just finished university in Canterbury! If you like the cathedral there, try and get up north to see York Minster which is also very spectacular. In England, all Cities have to have a cathedral in them to be certified as a City, so pretty much everywhere you visit will have its own cathedral :)

Sweet! I'm definitely planning on seeing the cathedral at York. And the one at Salisbury when I'm on my way to Stonehenge. The Canterbury cathedral is something you would NEVER come across in the United States.

Was your sister at the University of Kent? That's where my class is!
