library science

I am thinking of going (back) to school and getting a masters degree in "library and information science". What better paying job for me than to work in a library? I've worked at bookstores for about 10 years, and the job would suit me well. I'm looking into schools, and it seems no New Orleans schools have library science programs ( Read more... )

I'd pick theredpanther's brain about this since she's a librarian in NOLA. Funny, both Seale's that I know are librarians. I don't know where dark haired Seale is these days though.

I was wondering if she was on lj, too. Thanks, I have added her and sent a post her way :)

There's a Sealy who works for Jefferson Parish Library. Is that who you're thinking of?

Thanks! I saw the U of Florida's online program, and am looking at LSU now. I think I may choose to stay in Louisiana to avoid the high-cost nonresident fees.

The girl I dated fro 11 years is also a librarian and works with Seale (more or less. Seale's branch is in Algiers and Sharon's is on Napoleon)
Sharon had to go back and forth to Baton Rouge for a looong time to get her degree. At the time, I remember it was the only option she really had for the degree.

Hrm. That is my concern, as the program so far in state is LSU only, and a good school (where I grew up coincidentally) is San Jose State U in California, which has enormous fees, and an EXTRA $339 per UNIT for nonresidents. Gah! Times 43 units is... well entirely too much.
Plus, I hate that city. I lived in that general area for nearly 30 years.

Going back and forth to Baton Rouge will not work for someone without a car. Goddammit. Not many good schools have programs for library/info sciences that are 100% online, and those nonresident fees are insane.

With LSU, you can actually do your entire degree via the distance learning program ( ... )

This is exiting. I finally know what I want to be when I grow up, and I'm only 40! :-P

I realized I need to complete a bachelor degree before starting LSU's masters program (or anywhere, I think) in any case. I've always wanted a degree in art, so I've decided to go ahead and get my BFA and go from there. (I already have an Associate of Arts.) In the interim working at a library and asking a lot of questions seems the way to go, though I don't know if I can get a job without the schooling first. I'm going to pop by the Alvar branch one here by my place today and ask Mary Anne about it.

Thank you so much for your answers! I have saved your email :)
