Mandatory meeting in which I probably won't learn a thing

I was reading Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and found myself wondering why alchemy isn't taught at Hogwarts. I mean, it's been rather firmly established with the plot/title of the first book that alchemy exists. Is it not a respectable form of magic? I don't thinks that's it, what with the divination class.
