Funny--you mention taking up bowling "seriously," bit it sounds like you're in it to have fun and challenge yourself. The handicappers and cheaters are the ones taking it really seriously.
I think you make a very good point. I enjoy bowling quite a lot and am striving to improve to the point where I can bowl in scratch leagues (no handicaps). They're in it for the money, which reminds me of the long-ago days of "action bowling", which used to make more money than the professional tours did, and 50 years ago there was a lot of money on the PBA tour. Thanks for reading :).
Apparently the popularity of bowling for youth has remained much higher than for adults. Then again, kids leagues don't usually suck. Thanks for reading!
I have been accused of sandbagging on occasion, but no..I am genuinely awful (two digits awful)...but I sometimes luck into a game where I am 40 pins better. Don't ask me how.
This happens to me as well, but mostly because I am rather inconsistent and my spare game is awful. If I can string some strikes together I'll easily make it close to 200, but I'm prone to games 140 or lower if I can't figure out a line to the pocket (or put too much pace and not enough revs on the ball and just skid through the breakpoint). Still, big difference between sandbagging for pride and sandbagging for profit - if it weren't necessary motivation for a lot of people I would be happier without prize funds because that's likely money I lose to someone who is willing to game the system to get it.
