I love living in a country that's so beautifully, transparently single-minded. The national obsession with a single mediocre coffee house borders on the comical, and I find myself wondering if the term "local colour" can apply to an entire country that is twice the size of the Australian continent.

Yes, the marks are officially in, and I couldn't be happier. Wow, so far the Children of Dune miniseries is much better than the original Dune miniseries, despite having most of the same actors. I'm actually quite impressed with it, whereas the first one kind of left me staring at the really bad movie sets and the horrendously garish costumes. So the Calgary Flames have clinched a berth in the Stanley Cup playoffs and, as of tonight, secured themselves the top spot in their division (and third overall in the West) by thumping Colorado.
