I got off the phone a few moments ago with a woman I'll call "Beverly" because that is her name. Beverly works at a doctor's office that is home to a patient who is coming to see one of the doctors I represent here at The Hospital. When I worked at Harvard, which will always weigh down upon me in a weird PTSD way, listening to some of the administrators and faculty talk was a reality check onto itself. The bragging and incessant fights to be the king of your tiny molehill were just astonishing their scope and their viciousness. You kinda want to say, "congratulations, you're the fairest accounts payable supervisor in all the land, well done" or something along that line when you hear people talk about their jobs not with pride, but with braggery.

I used to say that the only time you should really hunker down and take your job super seriously is when, say, there is someone's life in your hands. Then, you can't really be cavalier and think "gosh, this is really cutting into my web surfing time" about your job.

What the flip, man. That woman has obviously never been a patient in The System.

Reality check:

Taking care of my father during his illness. He had always been such a quietly strong man. While his body was week, his will was still strong. But, it's definitely weird realizing that you'd have to do things like assist in bathing and dressing, etc.

I get a reality check like this almost daily, but the last big one was when I was on my way to my great-grandmother's funeral and I saw an ad for Friends. It was starting a week later than I thought it was, and I suddenly got really mad and upset ... and then I stopped and realized where I was headed and felt like a douche.

That's insane. She works for a PCP, so issuing referrals is a big part of her job. And it probably takes about 2 minutes.
