So, I pick a random story to review at Serebii - Missingo. Master's, to be exact - and it turns out the author is a really popular one with lots of followers. Great. There hasn't been any drama yet so far, but this habit of mine of picking the wrong stories to review is getting old ( Read more... )

Most likely he's popular due to the story being a comedy/parody. As long as the story is funny, writing skills aren't that much of a concern to some. I heard from my friend bobnbill that the comedy in it isn't that great, though (and thatMissing Master probably copied some jokes from him). Haven't read the fic yet, so I can't say. You mentioning it though makes me want to read at least the first chapter later tonight to see for myself if it's that great.

Aw, you're not back? :< *goes back to imagining that, lol*

I can't say anything about his other story, to be honest. I'm referring to his new one. It's titled 404 Error and he started it very recently. That's the one I've been reviewing and I'm basing my judgment on that one alone. No idea what his old fic is like. Do let me know what you think if you decide to give it a try, though.

I am not back. You're delusional. ;)

As a general rule, the tastes of the Serebii populace aren't very refined; there is definitely some bar of minimum quality (not very high: it mostly requires having paragraphing and readable spelling/grammar), and I definitely think it's higher than at places like FFN, but once past that, the sort of average forumgoer doesn't really see much of a difference between the objective quality of one fic and another, or at least can't articulate it. So instead the most popular, praised fics become the ones above that bar that engage people the most with humour, regular updates, quick pacing, etc., even if they aren't by a long shot the best fics above the bar.

(And believe me, Serebii has fawned over far worse fics than 404 Error.)

I should have known that, looking at the popularity of Mix's story, or Manaphy Man's story, back in the day. I suppose being away for a while makes me forget that. (People who put lots of thought and effort into their stories take longer to update, which means all those readers with short attention spans will forget. It's sad.)

Which is also why I'll be pretending that 'The Adventure Of Adventureness' doesn't exist. (What is up with that title? I know it's supposed to be a crack fic, but seriously.)

:O Good to have you back! I was thinking about you and some other great reviewers the other day, lamenting the fact that we'd likely never see you again.

I only read the first chapter and scattered bits and pieces of his previous popular fic, and was pretty unimpressed. As Dragonfree pointed out, what makes a fic popular on SPPf has little to do with the quality aside from being readable. Then again, I don't exactly pay attention to what's popular these days. :P

Also, while I have your attention, check out this chick named -Silver-. She is the current new source of craziness on the forums, now that the vore kid's gone.
Aside from that, you haven't missed out on too much. XD Welcome back.

Aw, you know just what to say to make me feel good about returning. (Ehm, not that I'm back. Obviously.)

I was wondering why he got a crazy amount of reviews only to find out he's apparently a pretty popular writer with a very popular fic. It's like I'm drawn to them, or something.

I had a look at her - hell, I even replied to a thread of hers - and she seems a mix between a troll and an idiot. I don't know what to think of her. She seems to evade every sensible thing people say just to keep the conversation going. I'm not entirely convinced she's not just baiting all of us for attention.

Yeah, MM is the flavour of the...idk what time period to use for his crack fic was popular for a good while already and hence that's why his new fic has that amount of attention as well. And with part of what Bay said... I might have made an entry about that on lj a while back (not much to search through though as I don't use lj much still!)
