So I failed day 2 of the qualifying exam again. I honestly thought I had a chance on this one, but I messed up one or two too many things on the Quantum part. The statistical mechanics part, the class that I failed and the part I got practically nothing on last time, I passed with flying colors. And the general physics part I died on, but SO DID ( Read more... )

I'd say only get drunk if you have some good friends around to keep you up, otherwise stuff like this will just make you a horribly, horribly depressed.

My opinion is that you should give the test another shot if finances allow. You know you're good enough to do this, you just need to buckle down one more time and get through it. I also like spacemika's advise. Talk to an adviser, find out your options, and do what feels right.

suck it up, get drunk this weekend, then study your ass off and get through it. I promise you a tour of the bourbon trail when you're done....

I agree with what everyone has said. Take a mental break and clear your head. You know you're a brilliant lunatic- so I say give it another shot.

In situations like this, it is important to remember that we, as graduate students, are the heirs of monastic, ascetic, and scholastic traditions. As a result, we operate in a system that not only encourages suffering, but nearly views it as a prerequisite to attaining some 'higher' state. At least we get showers, occasional food, and do not have to spend the next 30 odd years standing on a column. I hope.

Echoing others, get drunk (Scotch is my special friend for escapism in grad school), do something to vent, and give it another try. One of the few rational individuals in my field told me two things that have kept me somewhat sane: grad schools do not accept people they think will fail and, as a result, turn away a significant number of people. You would not be there if you could not succeed. Good luck man, you can do this.
