Apple products here are similar to what you describe - while you can buy directly from Apple, you can buy from some other retailers - but Apple sets the prices, and the retailers aren't really able to put things on "sale" - the best they can do to lure you in is to offer add-ons like a free gift card to their store if you buy the product from them ( ... )

Over here it is common to have a dual debit and credit card. We used to have something called a "bank card" which was essentially the same as debit card but national. Almost all our cards are either Visa or MasterCard/EuroCard. You can get only credit cards directly from American Express and DinersClub but almost nobody has them or they are corporate cards.

Over here it is much easier to get a debit card than to get a credit card. Even minors who don't have regular income can have a debit card.

I am always amazed how different the systems are in different countries :-).
