My official position on Terok Nor is "consultant". I am not actually employed by the station's command staff, but I am brought in when complex problems arise or difficult repairs are required. Both occur frequently, due to sabotage or simply the poor quality of construction and maintenance on this station. As such, I have knowledge of and clearance to many parts of the station which are closed to the general public (and even unknown to many of the officers; there are mazes of conduits, service levels, and shafts navigated only by engineers and sanitation staff). Even when I am not being consulted in an official capacity, the station's engineering staff often ask me for "favors" when they have a problem they cannot solve … or a problem which they may have accidentally caused, and want fixed before anyone else discovers the problem. This means that I have a great deal of access, and many contacts, that are required of me for my "real position" as
undercover agent.
I was originally uncertain as to why the Rebellion required undercover agents on a station which they already controlled. It was explained to me that the opposition also had undercover agents on Terok Nor, who would be watching all of the publicly known agents and officers on the station. Also, in the event that the Alliance recaptured Terok Nor, it was hoped that my status and position (and continued existence) would be able to continue.
Because transporter security is normally an important issue to begin with, but is of particular interest on Terok Nor given the crossovers to and from the "mirror universe". The station can be surrounded by a deflector screen that blocks all transport beams, but this is generally only used in emergency situations, given the constant traffic the station receives (both in spacecraft and in transporter traffic to and from Bajor below). Sensors detect and record all transports to and from the station, along with the signature of the beam and the origin/destination. This data is written to multiple locations, including to non-rewritable storage which can only be changed or destroyed physically.
I knew the secure location of this backup transporter log, and the pair of engineers on duty (nobody was ever allowed to work alone in a high security area) each owed me favors. I told them that I needed to check the transporter logs for any "curious" incidents. This terminology told them that possible interdimensional crossovers were involved. I explained that they would probably be contacted eventually to study the logs themselves, but that I wanted the "first look". They agreed, as long as they could watch over my shoulders.
I discovered no traces of interdimensional transporter signatures, which was precisely the result I expected. After all, I suspected that this team from the Federation had arrived in a vessel of some sort. Still, I was not planning to tell the two engineers that. When they saw that I had gotten negative results (and saved my search so that they would not have to duplicate the work later when the official orders to do so arrived), I hypothesized that the crossover may have occurred on the surface of Bajor this time, and suggested that they start checking the transporter logs from the planetary surface. I told them that I would check the records for shuttle traffic with the planet.
I lied. Still, I had both confirmed at least a part of my original suspicions and had made sure that the other investigators would be following a different trail than I was following. Assuming that a vessel from the mirror universe was involved, I would next have to check all of the ships currently docked to Terok Nor (since, had they beamed onto the station from their vessel, I would have seen an alien transporter signature in the logs). I would check the docking area first, not because I expected them to be there, but because I had to at least eliminate those ships (the majority of the ships docked to the station) before moving on - and to plant more diversions for the other investigators, if necessary.
