The Millefiore ever-recovered. This was how he'd designed them, how he'd fostered them. There was no time to suffer from unforeseen problems. There was only finding a solution or finding a way into unemployment. And, from the time of its conception, that policy had turned the Millefiore into a powerfully efficient machine, productivity and an endless quest for achievement crushing any who could not keep up with the juggernaut of his command beneath its progress ( ... )

She did not knock; as soon as Byakuran's aide (not Leonardo Lippi, she noted, inserting the information into the endlessly complex network of patterns and connections she tracked) saw her, he opened the door for her and ushered her inside the silence of Byakuran's office. The deep breath before the plunge: it beckoned, but Uni did not take it. He would see.

And she would not show weakness in front of him, not weakness that he himself did not foster. Uni had long struggled for this calm, this wall of silence surrounding her mind, unbreakable except when he chose to break it. She would not give it up so easily.

Not unless he wanted her to, of course.

Uni kept her eyes on the floor for a few moments more before raising them to find Byakuran's face.

"Byakuran-sama," she said. "Good morning."

Byakuran's smile curled just slightly at the sight of her. January had been a rush of events, as had most of February. It was hardly surprising that their paths had not crossed as much as he might have preferred. But, now, here she was, a placidity to her features as she stood before him. Even the rats of just days before couldn't shake her for too long, it seemed.

It was charming in a way and it reminded him why he had ensnared her into the position of his co-CEO, why he had worked so hard for the merger of the two companies.

He leaned back into the couch, the cushions still fresh, replacements for the original couch that had stood there just days before and gestured to the seat across from him. She wasn't someone he needed off-balance by standing, no.

"Uni-chan. It's good to see you out so early this morning," a lazy intonation.

"I hope I didn't keep Byakuran-sama waiting," Uni said, inclining her head slightly before taking her seat on the couch opposite him. She was probably early, at that, but time did not matter so much as timing, the invisible gauge that governed her steps. A careful glance at the furnishings of his room told her some things she needed to know: as she had done with her office, he too had replaced many things that had fallen prey to the depredations of the rats.

Friday the 13th had cost them. More than money: time.

And people, probably, if the feeling that lifted the hairs on the back of her neck were any judge.
