When you were in high school, were you part of the "Elite" crowd? And at the end of the year, when yearbooks were distributed, were you approached by some loser unknown to you, with a sad little yearbook in his/her arms that hadn't collected even one solitary signature? And did you take the yearbook, and write something generic like, "I don't know ( Read more... )

I was a social butterfly in high school. Hard to imagine now.

My close friends used to laugh because I'd come into the caffeteria in the morning and flit from one "clique" table to another laughing, poking around, mixing. I liked people. They seemed to like me. I hadn't been tossed on the fire of reality yet.

I pretty much knew everyone and I knew everybody whose book I signed. I was quirky even then though, so I was always writing things like "Champagne for our true friends, and true pain for our sham friends!" in their yearbooks. I wanted to be remembered. LOL

I don't think it worked.

Today it's me, my husband, and the dog.

I like it that way.

High school was the single most horrific experience of my life. The first year and a half, I was a sycophant to the more popular kids, and I obsessed over filing every student under some label in my "Clique File." Right before my family moved out of state, something happened that changed everything, and I developed more of a "Fuck 'Em All" attitude. Once I got settled in my new (albeit primarily redneck) high school, I was able to get along with every clique when I wasn't behaving like a complete bitch (and that was pretty much a daily occurrence). By the time I graduated, I was a total snob who didn't talk to anybody. I think two people signed my senior yearbook, and I didn't give a shit either way whether they did or not. I was never popular, but by that point I didn't think it mattered anymore ( ... )

Yes, that's what invariably happens. They're on top of the adolescent social world, then they quickly drop from sight once they're handed their diploma, and then the next thing you know, they're working the drive-thru window at McDonald's and give you a Big Mac instead of a Quarter Pounder and forget to put your Apple Pie in the bag.

That's what I should have done. Fifty bucks wasted on something I'll never look back at with fond memories ...

No yearbooks here, thanks god. It's so convenient to have no way to remember people from that time.

I was in the middle. I had some good friends who wrote good stuff and then I had crap from people giving me their phone numbers that I'd never, ever call.

I remember having to ask people if I could sign their yearbooks. And they'd always say, "Okay ... but don't sign on this page, because that's reserved for (boyfriend), and this page is reserved for (best friend), and (other best friend) already said she wants to sign the page with the (mascot) on it," etc. So I'd have about one square inch of space to write something in.

Yeah that happened to me too. People who are popular suck.
