Cradle to Cradle I'm halfway through this book. It's a surprisingly cheery read about our "disposable" society. Maybe I'm just finding it cheerful because it echoes a lot of my views on the world. Connie Willis writes very silly stories that combine romance and sci-fi and insanely detailed literary allusions. My mom got me To Say Nothing Of The Dog for Christmas a few years ago, and I'm hopelessly hooked.

an interesting concept... in Albania(which has/had very restrictive rules for women) there is an old tradition where a woman could swear off sex for life, and then live her life as a man. this enabled her to hold political office(and VOTE), provide for her family if there were no living male relatives, own a business, hold certain jobs etc. ( Read more... )

WikiScanner article on WiredI heard this on NPR this morning. Seems like it's gotten a lot of press recently, the page is a bit swamped. It compares the IP registration database with the IPs of editors on Wiki articles. For example, to catch a company or a politician massaging their image. I think Harry Potter has been way overhyped. I like the books, yeah, but not so much the movies; and not so much I can't wait for my mom to give the book to me at christmas. But I like that it brings people out into the community and this Harvard Sq event looks like it has a little something for Potter fans of all ages.
