I want to talk about oppression.

This is probably only vaguely related to this community, but I figure y'all are probably cool with off-topic rants 'n' rambles, and it is a subject that likely affects everyone in some way.

cut for those who don't care about being PC. Be forewarned: lots of swearing! )

I guess if we all said what we mean without using slang or cliches we wouldn't have the problem of accidentally oppressive language.

"You're a mean person and I don't like you" is more direct than saying "You're a fucking bitch."

Also, saying "you're an unintelligent homosexual male" is more direct than saying "you're a stupid faggot", and it's intentionally oppressive.

Oh, language.

Haha I'm totally going to say "you're a mean person and I don't like you" the next time I'm in a heated argument.

Generally, this is how I speak. It's more effective in my mind.

I use "douchebag" because I would not want it in my vagina. douching isn't good for you

My mind is often consumed by many thoughts like this in regards to language. Not necessarily just with offensive or oppressive terms, but a lot of terms, words, and phrases that are commonly used. I warn you that if you think too hard on it, you'll end up saying a lot less then you'd like to. I know that's what has happened to me. I've become scared of the power of language.

Wise words, thank you. It's something I'm constantly thinking about and working towards improving, but I know I mess up and I notice and admit that. Lately I've really been avoiding idioms and expressions whose origins I don't know. I think language is awesome and like you say, a very powerful tool... that can be used for good (or not-so-) ends.
