Thank you for this. PS: I haven't read/found anything about this movie and the blatant Racism that is Black face! Seriously, Black Face? It makes me sick.
I KNOW. I looked up the movie after posting this and... whoa. just whoa.
Makes me feel like Hollywood is making a merry and glorious backslide just 'cause they can. I don't even know what to say other than the producers and distributors are justifying their actions as "funny." it's humour so it's totally okay, right? Right.
Because it's funny to not only insult and degrade marginalized groups but also to make reference to past degradations as well. Right.
I don't think it's acceptable to use language that devalues and degrades people ever, ESPECIALLY those who are unable to defend themselves against attack. We have really big vocabularies, there are other words to use. And I am confused at how someone's heartfelt plea to be heard and understood and respected, coming from a member of a group so thoroughly and systematically marginalized as people with intellectual disabilities, could be seen as being, I don't know, full of himself?
Maybe some people take it to extremes, but when you write this it makes me think that you may just dismiss most legitimate protest as people being too sensitive.
People who have intellectual disabilities very rarely have voices, in society at large, in their own communities, even (or sometimes especially) in their own families. When someone speaks up, I'm going to listen. And I am going to do what I can to help them be heard.
