Funny thing: you get colder in Northern California than you do in New York.

Some of it is about dressing appropriately. Some of it is just because you adjust to the colder temperatures in a way that you can't quite manage in CA. Some of it is because when it gets that cold, there's no moisture in the air anymore because it's all frozen, and it's humidity that really makes you feel extremes of temperature. Some of it is because buildings are constructed a lot better out there, on the whole, and the heating systems are more efficient, so you have warmer oases. You don't feel cold and then colder when you're going from building to building. You feel warm and then less warm.

When I was living in New York, I came home for Christmas. When I was packing, I thought, "It's going to be around 50 degrees at home. What was I wearing when it was 50 degrees here?" So I packed kind of a light sweater and figured I was good. I froze my ass off so thoroughly that I had to buy a lined coat to wear while I was in town. Then I went back to New York and the freezing weather and wore a coat only slightly heavier.

people in maine speak with a really funny accent that can be hard to understand. you know the simpsons where the shelbyvillians steal the lemon tree? they talk like the old guy who is telling all the kids to eat the turnips. if i moved to maine i'd probably feel like i were constantly surrounded by the elderly, even if i wasn't. solely because of their accent.

the people i've talked to on the phone from there are pretty normal sounding, but the probably only let people with minimal accents answer the phone.
