Burn Coke!

May 25, 2007 07:06

Coke just bought the company that makes Vitamin water. This is a problem since Vitamin water is one of the few packaged drinks that make me happy (I can drink them without staring at the label with a dictionary), I refuse to buy coke products so I guess no more vitamin water. Also I have this horrible feeling that coke is going to add white mans ( Read more... )

... ehh, that's what I get for not doing my research.

Coke's bottling practices and multiple human rights violations are indeed good reasons to boycott Coke, and may make me reconsider purchasing their products in future.

However: I don't quite see how your other argument for quitting Vitamin Water makes all that much sense. Your preemptive boycott of the product based on the presumption that Coke will (someday) add high-fructose corn syrup to the Vitamin Water recipe. If Coke were a 'better' company (human-rights-wise), would you still quit Vitamin Water before seeing if this theory pans out?

I'm working on making responsible, level-headed decisions these days; I'm not interested in knee-jerk, assumption-based responses. At least that's what I'm trying to do.

while i might not like coke, i'm not going to stop buying diet cherry vanilla dr. pepper because it's loosely related to the coke brand. maybe vitamin water will have the same sort of relationship - and i doubt they'd sell knowing that corn syrup would be going into their product in the future.

One time I went to whole foods to buy some corn syrup for making ice cream. So, I asked the whole foods worker where to find the corn syrup and he was all "holy sweet bejesus you impure human! we don't carry corn syrup! are you insane!" I felt very stupid and judged. My friend Eric had a similar interaction at whole foods when he asked where the coke was located. I'm still shy about asking for help at whole foods :(
