I did a first impressions-ish thing for Robert two months ago! And then he became my spam whore. uh. oops. And while some people asked for relationship stuff in my essay meme, I didn't actually ... do a real one, and stuff has this tendency to change quickly with him. Where by changing, I mean things get complicated and there's a lot to write about

Okay, the thing with Robert is that ... first off, he likes talking to people! It's just how he is. He used to like those conversations where he could be snarky and biting, but now, he's good with conversation that goes back and forth and is interesting. If he's not interested within a few comments, he'll brush the person off and slip into the monosyllibic replies. He just doesn't care! It's how he rolls.
Add to that the fact that even if he talks with people like that, it's really hard to make him like you. He's actually gotten a lot better about this over the past few months! But he'll have conversations with people where he'll actually talk with them and give more than just an "mm" or "ahh," and he won't ... really ... care about them. Sheryl comes to mind immediately as someone who falls into this category - she's definitely interesting to talk to, but he can't even remember her name because he doesn't ... really care. (I LOVE YOU, SHERYL)So! Someone making a positive impression on Robert right off ( ... )

... I'm losing my train of thought. It's just. It's a nice, easy, comfortable relationship, which is the kind Robert doesn't really make often. Where he has someone he finds interesting and wants to talk with more. Aaand the fact that the Doctor showed interest in him and then pretty much gained his trust forever with that one thread in Fuura's post ... well. Robert's now more openly willing to talk to him, speak what's really on his mind as opposed to a heavily watered down version, and actually listen to him and what he's saying. Because at the end of the day, Robert's stubborn as hell. But he'll listen to what the Doctor has to say in terms of advice (like with the Mal stuff), and while he'll never accept anything blindly anymore, he'll consider it. Which is something for him ( ... )

So uh. Hakuren is one of the few humans (if not the only, I think?) to actually make a good impression on Robert. Part of this is the orphanage ping! lol essays in Robert's journal, sob, moving on. Hakuren seemed to genuinely care about the kids, which instantly softened Robert up juuust a bit since. Well. He never got that! But Hakuren struck him as being genuine.
... which is important because THEN the topic of faith came up! Robert himself is ambivalent about the church - he's met the God of their world, he's duly unimpressed, you know how that goes. It's not a big deal for him, but it was a big deal for one of the most important people to him. Robert interacted heavily with Malcolm Reynolds when they were both in camp previously, and the subject of faith and Mal's loss of it came up quite a bit. He got an earful about it, basically! So while he has no personal issue with the church or faith or anything, he dealt heavily with someone who did. And that didn't color his own views, per ce? But it was always interesting to ( ... )

And after talking with her a bit, she's struck him as ... well, nice. Please note! That often with Robert, he will be completely nasty to "nice" people because he doesn't find them sincere (i.e. Peter). This is just how he is! So for him to actually find her to be nice and sincere is, uh, something in itself. He's not sure how he feels about her - she's interesting enough! And she's nice! And she's toppy enough to keep him talking when he would've ducked out of a conversation a few comments beforehand ( ... )

Robert and Donna! You can, uh, read a bit of the crap I typed at the Doctor plus the crap in his journal, but to sum it up - Robert's not interested in people easily and he's kind of ... well. He'll talk with people, but won't necessarily connect or remain interested in the conversation for too long unless it strikes him. WITH THAT SAID, Donna knows the Doctor, and that in itself makes her interesting, because ... well, the Doctor's interesting to him! So while their conversation itself isn't one he'll, uh, remember much, he will actually go out of his way to hit her up again, because she has the potential to be interesting in his eyes.
If any of that makes sense.
