One general question, or rather a clarification that the rules are the same:

It used to be that the qualifying fandoms were your "entry fee" but that the remixer could choose a story in a different fandom if the fancy so struck.

That's still the case, right?

Definitely still the case! You can remix whatever you want, provided it doesn't fall into one of the exempt categories -- co-written, safe story, etc.

Can I just check if crossover stories are okay to remix?

A clarification on the rules, please...

The rules are pretty clear about what can and cannot be done with existing pairings in a story (no eliminating the pairing, no slash-ing a het pairing, no het-ing a slash pairing) but what if there are no pairings, per se. If there's a friendship - can that be made romantic?

Um. Kind of use your discretion. It's not prohibited in the rules, and I've done it when it's clear from my remixee's other work that they have written the pairing. But if there's no indication your remixee would welcome it, we'd advise against it, especially if the pairing is likely to be controversial (underage, for example). It's not a gift exchange, but...people and pairings! It tends to get complicated.

Thanks for the guidance. It's not a controversial pairing at all (in fact, it's pretty much the primary pairing in the fandom), and the story I'm thinking of remixing can just as easily remain platonic with a touch of UST.

So I have this friend who maybe was wondering about historical characters/fandoms. If the character in question is a historical figure (Henry VIII, for example) would we have to stick to a particular canon from the fic (The Tudors) or can we incorporate alternate characterizations (details from Anne of the Thousand Days)?

Asking for friend.

It sounds like what you're asking is whether you can write a crossover. In which case, the answer is yes!

This is not a question. It is just to say that I am Very Excited.

I am toally seconding this entire comment. I've had an AO3 for less than a week - got it specially to sign up for this, and I have all the exact same questions :)

Hee! Copying and pasting my first response, which hopefully answers your questions, too:

Hitting the fulfil button on AO3 allows you to post, and (all being well!) will fill in the gift and challenge fields, as well as ensuring that no-one can see your story until the archive officially opens on May 11. The challenge is anonymous, and author names are revealed a week after the archive opens -- that means they'll be revealed on 18 May this year. We ask that you don't post anywhere else until that happens. Once names are revealed on AO3, the story you wrote will just appear on your normal works list.

Let me know if you've still got questions!

This andswers all the immediate questions, and I'll email if I have any others. Thanks!
