Roses & the garden
The roses that platypusid gave me seem to be making it! 3 out of 4 bushes are now putting out new growth. Even the one that I really didn't think would make it, has new growth. They get lots of morning sunlight and I water them every day ( Read more... ) -

Today my basil suddenly started thriving. Moving it to the SFG was apparently the answer! I don't know why. I'm just glad it is righting itself and that I can eat some basil soon. -
Pond Stuff
The pond has been invaded by string algae. This type of algae is a real pain in the ass. It can clog filter systems, crawl all over plants, and is generally unsightly. The pond has a lot of plant coverage, so it's not really in the pond, but in the filter. I will have to get some barley straw to get rid of it. The lignins in barley straw ( Read more... ) -
Enrichment For Rex
I often think that Rex is bored. His live is pretty boring as it goes- he doesn't get much enrichment. So today when I saw a black cricket in the yard, I caught it and put it in his pen. It ran behind him and he was gazing at me, so I turned him around. When he saw it he started stalking it. Whether he catches it or not, it's good enrichment ( Read more... ) -
Turtle Color
I noticed recently that Al's color has darkened considerably this year. RESs tend to darken in color as they age, but his darkening has been drastically sped up this year- I wonder if it is to do with being outside? Maybe the extra sun requires extra melanin ( Read more... ) -

The elderberries in the back yard appear to be ripe, but there are only a few handfuls of them. What should I do? Cook them and make a compote? This recipe for elderberry bread looks good, but needs a lot of ingredients.
