Realization

Today's test only serves to solidify the fact that I am simply not meant to learn another language. I'm lagging behind in the course and I'm not even in the ranks of the students that are good. What is pissing me off more than that is how the professor's ignore those struggling with speaking practice and only ask on those who have shown proficiency ( Read more... )

Whoa, whoa, whoa. The professor is neglecting the students who need help but YOU are the one who's hopeless? HE fails but YOU'RE the loser?

Isn't it possible you're just in too advanced a class? Nobody learns at the same pace as everyone else. And anyway, so you flubbed a test. If Thomas Edison gave up every time he failed, would he have invented the light bulb? Stephen Hawking started five squares behind (literally) almost everybody and look where he is. Do you think Julia Child, Jimmy Stewart, Walt Disney, or Paul McCartney didn't have to struggle to overcome their failures?

Ok, so you botched a test. You still know more than I do, and you're in a position to keep learning even more. Do you know what you did wrong? Will you get it right next time? I thought so. ^_~

Trust me: Let it go, and Keep Moving Forward.

That or maybe the teacher just sucks, I know my AS/400 teacher in one of my programming classes was like that.

But yeah I agree with everything else ya said and want to second it. :)

Yeah, seriously. The problem you have is that the professor isn't a good teacher, not that you can't learn the language. Granted, choosing some weird-ass Asian language instead of something logical and Western may not be the best choice (yay ethnocentrism), but he's doing a bad job of teaching if he's not focusing on students like you, who may not even be doing that bad, but feel they are, and therefore need the extra help.

In summary, bad teachers exist in every country. Sorry that you got one.

Seriously they just don't call on you? That's insane, we have horrible, horrible speakers in our class but they (she) still get called on just as much as the perfect speakers.

I'm really sorry that it's not going well for you right now, but I'm sure you're just feeling stressed out. I feel that way after every test; like there's no way I did well and I'd might as well quit now. Just hang in there, and even if you're not the best you're improving in giant leaps.

You don't know me, but I was looking around friends lists and yeah.
I thought you should know that it does get better. Every language class I had was dominated by the people who already knew the language, leaving the rest of us behind. But you keep at it. And accept some lower grades while you're learning because you're doing just that...learning.
But there will come a day when you go to class, and gasp! know the answer! and it clicks. And it's so worth that day. So keep at it, and don't let it get you down.

I would like to add that Japanese professors have a HORRIBLE habit of not catering to the regulars and catering to those who are more than proficient. I don't know why, but I ran into it when I was in Hikone. I was one of the highest in the class, but every night I'd do study groups with everyone else in the class, and I know how they felt. I still don't understand the logic of only teaching to the elite... but I think it's a cultural thing where "if you want to be part of the group you better pay attention"

Dave is completely correct. Keep working at it. You will be fantastic. <3
