Some of it is that conservative Christian extremists (generally rich and white) have become extremely shrill and panicked by the changes in the States as well as the rest of the world. The author of that book review went out of his way to make clear his reactions were to the deliberate misinformation in that textbook, and not a comment on anyone's beliefs or religion. That it remained respectful and did not try to sneak in some weird counter-indoctrination were two of the reasons I posted the article and didn't flag it as potentially offensive

I very nearly suffered a catastrophic failure of all diplomatic systems when I saw her final reply. There have been studies done regarding the psychology of anti-evolutionists. One of the key differences in how they are wired is that they crave closure. The mysteries and unknown aspects that make scientists curious and interested are terrifying for the anti-evolutionists. Religion gives them the closure they need: 'Because God did it that way' is a relief-giving absolute. There does seem to be something to those findings, although there have only been a few of these kinds of studies. Likewise, there are some interesting articles looking at what slams up an anti-evolutionist's defenses

Not gonna lie -- one of the major reasons I didn't say anything to her was my sole access to FB being through the mobile app, and it being such a pain in the ass to type that way (even with the slide-out keyboard). Admittedly, the other reason was distaste for online conflict. (But it would have been awesome if you'd gone for the button-pushing response and then banned her, so she couldn't get a reply back.)
