I have one friend who actually has made a life's study on these subjects, so I'm going to bounce your question to her for a definitive answer. I'm still learning. What I think is most significant about John using the sign for the Character of Saturn is that it perfectly balances between life and death, much as we saw Dean framed between the EXIT and OBSTETRICS signs in the opening shot

SQUEEEEEEEEEEE! That was my favorite shot of the whole show! For exactly that reason (well, the whole "caught between life and death" thing, not the Character of Saturn thing, cause I'd be lying out my ass if I tried to pass off knowing any of that shit before you started your masters class in SPNology.)

But if he doesn't do the markings in order to control it, does that mean those aspects will still aid him or be present in the spell?

This is amazing to read...and gotta re-read (couple dozen times at least) 'cos truthfully, some of it was way over my head!
