"If" I've Ever Learned Anything
There's a very famous poem called "If" by Rudyard Kipling that I've always loved--despite my big problems with Kipling--and has been resonant lately. I'm surprised that I haven't heard it from a member of the commentariat. The first verse is:

Someone posted this on the Slog yesterday (Stranger blog, Seattle alt-weekly non-obsessives) and it made me cry for the 4th or 5th time in the 24 hours since Election Day began. Part of being a grown-up, in my estimation is trying look at things from both sides, now. Tolerate and be kind to Christians, even the ones who try to impose their beliefs on you, try to understand why someone would vote Republican, or perhaps shoot a wolf from a helicopter.

The thing about leaving a LiveJournal behind, or sort of pretending to, and sticking around, is that all of the sudden there are all these people.
