YAY for astronomy toys! Sounds like a fun seminar! A lot of good points brought up, however how are they going to get funded these days? After Bush's "let's go to Mars" speech, a lot of satellite funding has been cut... I guess time will tell.

Btw - ever hear of a lj cut ;)

Yeah, there was a lot of grumbling about the funding issues. He had a sympathetic audience there.

And I know about lj cuts, but I HATE them. I mean, if you don't want to read what I have to say, then don't. But if you do want to read it, then why should I make you click an extra button? It just seems silly to me. I'm constantly annoyed when other people use them, so I don't use any myself.

I know, I just had to give you a hard time! I don't really care, but since you still give me crap about laundry over 5 years later, it had to be said!

he did neglect to mention the most important reason to put a telescope on the moon: it would be cool.

This is true.

Oh! I forgot to tell you the best comment of the seminar! Someone asked a question about how much the speaker thought the Chinese space race and announced attempts to get to the Moon would affect anything. The speaker shrugged and said, "Well, honestly, if I was worried about anyone beating us back to the Moon and doing anything useful there, I'd watch the Russians, not the Chinese. The Russians have all the experience, launch vehicles, and infrastructure to do it. The Chinese don't. Before the get to the Moon, they'll need to do some near-Earth missions first. Right now, the Chinese have no experience with rendezvous and dockings at all."

Srinivas (ever so innocently): "Except at very high speeds."

The speaker almost fell over laughing. It was a great comment. :)
