I like using tumblr for political, cultural, environmental, ethics, city planning type things. I like it because reblogging and "liking" is fun, especially when other people reblog/like your stuff. You also use tags, and then people search the tags they like and find your posts, which is probably the biggest + of tumblr. I've found most of my blogs/followers from tag searches (or reblogs). There are quite a few profession bloggers who talk about serious things that use the service, even though it's sorta known for younger people. (You can install a regular commenting widget and get your own .com for it too). Wordpress self-hosted is good too but it doesn't come in with a built in readership and costs some money to host. So just depends what you want from your blogging platform!
