Imagination, knowledge, conversational skills...

A year ago, the following conversation by no means would have been possible:

Jamie:  5-4-3-2-1-BLAST OFF! ::sound effect, accompanied by him moving his hands in the air:: Da rocket ship!

Me:  Jamie, where's the rocket ship going?

::Jamie points up::

Me:  Is the rocket going up?

Jamie:  Up in da sky, to outer space.

Me:  What will the people in the ( Read more... )

Hey, even kids without any verbal quirks will sometimes give you a WTH answer. This conversation is still really, really exciting!

I know I posted this in the community, but that conversation was just great.

Oh, I should introduce myself.. I'm a teenager with now HFA, could have been classified as lower functioning when I was younger, also with SPD and APD. And joint problems that they can't seem to diagnose. My 5 year old brother (6 in April, time flies!) also has autism and SPD. I dislike using functioning labels when they're so young, though. Most agree he's MFA, some say LFA, one even said HFA. Only time can tell. He can read and write but isn't quite on the stage Jamie's at, verbally. He sometimes has functional speech (even strung a few words together once!) but most of the time has echolalia.

Do you mind if I add you as a friend?

I was completely nonverbal until about halfway through kindergarten, when the class was working on sounds of letters and something clicked. I learned to talk by sounding out words that were in my head. I still go on and off with speech, sometimes I can talk, sometimes I can't. My best days, I can have a small conversation. Most days I only use a word or two at a time. Then there's the nonverbal days, the most frustrating. I stim a LOT, I flap and rock mostly. I hit myself during meltdowns, I honestly have no idea why, intellectually. I have major issues processing speech, it's gotten a little better over the years. I mostly communicate through writing. I'm mainstreamed in school, actually taking pretty hard classes, by some miracle whatever caused my autism left my intelligence and reading intact, to a point. Abstract things are a problem, so is figurative language, that's where I tend towards the Asperger's end of things. I go closer to classic autism for most of it ( ... )
