Learning To Use a Serger

Sep 27, 2024 01:12

So many other women have told me that they own a serger but they never use it. Either they can't figure out how to thread it correctly or change out the needles by themselves and whenever some little something-or-other goes wrong the only thing they can do is to take their serger to a repair shop. Then, after getting hit by a big repair bill once ( Read more... )

Even very young girls have been observed (clinically) talking themselves through a task, either reciting what they're doing as they do it, or figuring it out as they go along with a lot of "If this [goes this way]' or "If this [goes here], then----" or, "Put the red piece there; does the blue piece go next to it? ---No; what fits in there? This wheel?"

I do this sort of thing all the time although you'll rarely hear me speaking. I do talk to myself internally, forming sentences reminding me or instructing myself.

...as if we're hardwired to do it this way.

Your other observation isn't unique to you, that physically forming the words on paper seems to "set" the memory in long-term memory in your brain. In college/university, my fingers raced across the pages of my spiral-bound notebooks trying to record almost every syllable the professor/s uttered. In one evening class (sometimes my only option for the subject I wanted or needed), the young lady seated next to me commented during a break, "You're taking notes! I happened to look ( ... )

It came from a short video that popped up in my youtube feed unexpectedly one day.

It's been very useful.

Stubborn persistence has gotten me through more tough to solve problems than I care to talk about.

There have been times in my life when my brain just said "NO WAY!" the first half-dozen times it was exposed to something I wanted to learn how to do and the only thing I could do was to keep pecking away at it until BITS OF IT BEGAN TO STICK.

Then, I'd go and build on the BITS THAT STUCK....

I'd find my way to doing whatever it was I was trying to learn.

Making all those notes help too.

I need to unscrew mom's and undo where its jammed I can see it in there.

once its threaded right - to change threads cut old up near spool and tie a tiny knot cut off tails, gently pull new thread by the old one, all the way thru the needles and then you can proceed
its faster than restringing it. its what we did with power and embroidery machines
at the sewing jobs.
sewing with nancy had the best videos on sergers.
