Things have been kind of crazy around here. After the nonsense with the craigslist post for the room for rent, Margaret decided to rent the upstairs room herself instead of dealing with another person, so we just had Ben's room to rent out while he's away, which is pretty much all the time now. agree a lower rent for the small bedroom (perhaps Ben can rent that, if he's away all the time?) and then divide the remaining rent equally? yes it's not fair, but it might stop the squabbling.

however, if you and Patrick loathe each other so much and are causing so much friction for Ben, i'd suggest not living together and for Ben to see you separately. also, do NOT complain to Ben about Patrick. if you want to vent, pick Margaret or someone neutral. forcing Ben to choose wont make matters any better.

Margaret is taking her room plus the smaller room. Ben is sharing my room (and sharing part of the rent). The rooms are all taken.

Yeah, I'm doing my best to not say anything negative about Patrick around Ben. I think we're going to just have to suffer through for a while, but one of my goals is to discuss having Patrick move out and we'll find someone else for the basement in January when the lease is up. That way, they can still be friends and I don't ever have to deal with Patrick.

I don't know if this suggestion is at all useful, but have you considered shuffling the rooms, so that someone else gets the expensive basement and Patrick gets a smaller, cheaper space?

None of the rest of us want the basement, & Patrick has too much crap for the smaller rooms, plus he's got a dog that lives downstairs only. There's really no way to do a room shuffle.
