I'm not worried about this variety of support- the 'well, that didn't work, pick up the pieces and find another way' variety. I'm annoyed at the 'well, that didn't work, so you know, you should just give up on this silly dream and become a productive member of society because obviously you weren't cut out for this' variety. I don't mind 'get a new dream'- I mind 'get over your dream.' I know it's competitive, otherwise there wouldn't be much point to it. I'm annoyed that I'm being put off for another year, sure, but I know this is part of it. I just wish I stood a chance of getting a PhD before I was 35, you know? :P
Also, coming from the staff side of a university, not only is academia normally competitive, but right now departments are struggling to pay for the grad students they have. I don't know for sure that this means anyone is perhaps cutting back just a hair, taking in 5 to a program instead of 6, making choices they think are safer instead of more exciting. But that's the vibe I'm getting off of the administrative folks from my neck of the woods.
So it would be kind of lame to say 'welp, give it up,' when part of the picture may be simple bad timing. That's ever-changing.
Keep going. You're on the path that makes you truly happy, not the one you think should make you happy. Most people never catch the difference in time. You did. So just keep your path. You know you don't need us to tell you that, nor approve it.
